Understanding GL Assessments at The Meadows Academy
At The Meadows Academy we believe strong reading and numeracy skills are key to every child's success. Thats why we use New Group Reading Test (NGRT) and New Group Maths Test (NGMT) - an annual assessment that helps us to understand each pupils reading and maths abilities and provide tailored support.
Most pupils complete the assessments with 1-2-1 support. Children have notice of when an assessment will take place and access emotional support and reassurance throughout. We ensure pupils understand why they are taking the tests and how we will use them. Tests take between 30 and 45 minutes.
What is NGRT?
NGRT is an adaptive test that adjusts in real-time to a pupil’s performance. It includes:
✅ Sentence Completion – Assesses decoding and basic comprehension.
✅ Passage Comprehension – Evaluates deeper understanding of longer texts.

Why is NGRT important?
The test provides a Standardised Age Score (SAS), comparing a pupil’s reading level to the national average. This allows us to:
✔ Identify strengths and areas for improvement.
✔ Provide personalised reading interventions.
✔ Ensure all students can access texts and progress confidently.
