English Curriculum Intent
At The Meadows Academy, our English curriculum is central to our vision of Belonging, Becoming and Beyond. English empowers our pupils to communicate, to make sense of the world around them and to see themselves as capable learners with a voice.
Our English curriculum is intended to ensure that all pupils develop the reading, writing and oracy skills necessary to improve life chances. We recognise that success in English underpins access to further education, employment and independence, and that achieving a recognised qualification in English is a crucial gateway to these opportunities.
Many of our pupils have experienced disrupted education and gaps in learning, particularly at primary level. Our English curriculum is therefore highly personalised, meeting pupils at their individual starting points while explicitly fostering a sense of belonging. Through consistent routines, carefully chosen texts and relational teaching, pupils are supported to feel safe, valued and included as members of a learning community, rebuilding trust in education alongside foundational skills. We draw on a deep understanding of the National Curriculum across Key Stages 1–3 to identify and address missed learning, while carefully sequencing learning to ensure progression towards Key Stage 4 outcomes.
Our English curriculum is designed to open up pupils’ worlds and develop cultural capital through exposure to diverse writers, vocabulary and ideas. Reading is at the heart of English teaching, supporting pupils to develop comprehension, fluency and confidence, while writing and spoken language provide structured opportunities for self-expression, reflection and emotional regulation.
Assessment within our English curriculum is purposeful and supportive. We work backwards from clearly defined assessment end points, informed by qualification specifications, while maintaining a strong focus on building deep understanding over time. Assessment enables pupils to recognise progress, experience success and becoming increasingly confident in their skills as readers, writers and speakers, strengthening self-belief and motivation.
Above all, our English curriculum aims to help pupils re‑engage with learning, develop resilience and confidence in their abilities, and leave The Meadows Academy equipped with the communication skills, confidence and qualifications needed to succeed beyond school.
