Supporting Pupils with SEMH and Autism

Supporting Pupils with SEMH and Autism through Occupational Therapy

Pupils with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, including those on the autism spectrum, often face challenges in managing their emotions, behaviour, and responses to sensory experiences. Everyday school environments can feel overwhelming due to noise, lights, movement, or social demands, which can make self-regulation difficult.
Occupational therapy plays a key role in supporting these pupils. Therapists work with children to understand their unique sensory needs and develop strategies to help them manage sensory input, regulate emotions, and respond calmly in different situations. This can include activities that improve focus, body awareness, and coping skills, tailored to each child’s individual profile.
By addressing sensory and emotional regulation needs, occupational therapy helps pupils feel more in control, reduces anxiety and frustration, and supports engagement in learning and social activities. For children with autism and SEMH needs, this support provides a vital foundation for wellbeing, confidence, and long-term success in school and beyond.
