Rights Respecting Schools at The Meadows Academy
At The Meadows Academy, we are proud to be working towards the UNICEF UK Rights Respecting Schools Bronze Award. This award is based on the principles of equality, dignity, respect, non-discrimination, and participation, and aims to embed the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child into the fabric of school life.
As a special school for pupils with social, emotional and mental health needs, we believe that understanding and respecting rights helps our students feel safe, valued, and empowered. It supports their emotional wellbeing, strengthens relationships, and encourages a sense of belonging—core to our school vision: Belonging, Becoming, Beyond.
At The Meadows, children learn about their rights through bespoke lessons delivered during extended tutor time every Friday. These sessions are designed to be accessible, meaningful, and relevant to our pupils’ experiences. They help students understand their own rights and the rights of others, and encourage them to think about fairness, respect, and responsibility both within school and in the wider world.
Although we are at the beginning of our Rights Respecting journey, we are already seeing the positive impact on pupil engagement, confidence, and relationships. We look forward to continuing this work and embedding children’s rights into our ethos, curriculum, and everyday practice.
