The Meadows Academy Champions Reading with ‘Take 10’ Literacy Event
Literacy remains a top priority at The Meadows Academy, where many children face barriers to reading or are reluctant to pick up a book. To inspire a love of reading and support wellbeing, students in Years 8 and 9 recently took part in the National Literacy Trust’s “Take 10 with Mollie Ray” event.
Held to coincide with World Mental Health Day, the “Take 10” campaign encourages everyone to pause and read for ten minutes, highlighting the positive impact reading can have on mental health. This year, students joined a live virtual session with Mollie Ray, an acclaimed illustrator and graphic novelist, who shared her creative journey and inspired pupils to explore visual storytelling through her wordless graphic novel, Giant.
During the event, students learned about the power of stories, took part in a live Q&A, and discovered that reading can be fun, calming, and accessible to everyone—whether it’s a comic, magazine, or traditional book.
We believe every child deserves to experience the joy and benefits of reading. Events like ‘Take 10’ help us break down barriers and show our pupils that reading is for everyone. The school’s participation in “Take 10” is part of a wider commitment to promoting literacy, belonging, and personal growth for all students.
