National Poetry Workshop

Year 7 join National Poetry Workshop with Tomos Roberts for Remembrance
As part of The Meadows Academy’s commitment to literacy and personal development, our Year 7 students took part in the National Literacy Trust’s “Poems for Remembrance” online workshop, led by poet and author Tomos Roberts (@probablytomfoolery).

This live, interactive event—held in partnership with the Royal British Legion—marks National Poetry Day and invites pupils to reflect on the meaning of Remembrance through poetry. Tomos Roberts shared an exclusive first reading of his newly commissioned poem, written especially for the occasion, and guided students through creative writing techniques to help them craft their own Remembrance poems.

Following the workshop, Year 7 will create a special Remembrance Day poetry anthology. This collection of original poems will be presented to a veteran during the school’s Remembrance Day assembly, and each student will also take a copy home to share with parents and carers. The project aims to help students connect with the stories and sacrifices of others, while building confidence in their own writing and creativity.

We are proud to give our Year 7s the opportunity to take part in this national event. It’s a meaningful way to connect literacy with personal reflection and creativity, and to honour those who have served. This event is part of a wider programme of Remembrance activities at The Meadows Academy, supporting students to explore history, identity, and emotional literacy through the power of words.
