Keeping Our Community Safe: Fireworks and Bonfire Night Awareness!

We were proud to welcome Sarah Kinghorn from County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service for an engaging and thought-provoking session focused on fireworks safety, Bonfire Night and the importance of making safe, responsible choices.

Our pupils explored the Firework Code, discussed the serious dangers associated with fireworks and deliberate fire-setting, and considered the potentially life-changing consequences of an arson conviction. They reflected on how a criminal record could affect future opportunities, including careers, international travel and even the ability to own a home.

We were incredibly proud of the confidence, maturity and awareness demonstrated by our pupils throughout the session. They contributed thoughtful answers, showed an excellent understanding of the heightened risks associated with this time of year and demonstrated a reassuring awareness of how to respond appropriately in an emergency.

These valuable discussions go far beyond keeping safe on Bonfire Night. They empower our learners to make informed decisions, understand the consequences of their actions and take greater responsibility for themselves and their community.

A huge thank you to Sarah and County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service for delivering such an important and impactful session.

UN Convention on the Rights of the Child – Article 29: Goals of Education
Education should develop every child's personality, talents and abilities to their full potential, while encouraging respect for human rights, different cultures and the environment. This session supported learners to develop essential life skills, make informed decisions and understand their responsibilities towards themselves and others.

British Values – The Rule of Law
Pupils explored the importance of laws surrounding fireworks, arson and hoax emergency calls, developing their understanding of why laws exist, how they protect the public and the consequences of breaking them.

We are committed to preparing our learners not just for their next steps in education, but for life beyond the classroom.
