Celebrating Representation in Food: Black History Month at The Meadows Academy
Following our exploration of representation in Science, students at The Meadows Academy have continued their Black History Month journey through the vibrant lens of food and culture. In Food Technology lessons, pupils have been investigating how culinary traditions reflect identity, heritage, and community — and how representation in food can deepen our understanding of the world around us.
This cross-curricular approach aligns with our school’s vision of Belonging, Becoming, Beyond, encouraging students to see culture not just as something to study, but something to experience, taste, and celebrate.
Cooking Up Culture: Caribbean Inspiration
Across all year groups, students have embraced the bold and aromatic flavours of Caribbean cuisine — a region rich in history and cultural fusion. The focus dish was Jerk Chicken, a staple of Jamaican cooking known for its fiery seasoning and deep-rooted significance.
Year 7 students created Jerk Chicken Wraps, combining traditional spices with fresh ingredients. Leon’s wrap was a particular highlight, as he thoughtfully added a colourful side salad that elevated both the flavour and presentation.
Years 8–11 took on the challenge of preparing Jerk Chicken with coconut rice. Some students adapted the dish to include vegetables, showcasing creativity and a keen understanding of how recipes evolve across cultures and households.
More Than Just a Meal
These lessons were about more than cooking — they were about connection. Students explored how food can be a powerful form of representation, telling stories of migration, resilience, and celebration. They asked insightful questions: How does food reflect identity? Why are some cuisines more visible than others in mainstream culture? What does it mean to honour a tradition through cooking?
The participation across all year groups was outstanding, with students showing curiosity, respect, and enthusiasm. Their dishes were delicious — but their reflections were even more nourishing.
Continuing the Celebration
As Black History Month continues, we’ll be sharing more highlights from across the curriculum. Whether through science, food, art, or literature, our students are discovering that representation matters — and that every story, every flavour, and every voice deserves to be heard.
At The Meadows Academy, we’re proud to celebrate the richness of Black history and culture, and we remain committed to creating spaces where every student feels seen, valued, and inspired.
