Celebrating Representation in Science: Black History Month at The Meadows Academy
This October, students at The Meadows Academy have been exploring Black History Month across all subjects, with a special focus on representation — a theme that aligns with our school’s vision of Belonging, Becoming, Beyond.
In Science, pupils have been investigating the lives and legacies of Black scientists who have made remarkable contributions to the world — yet whose stories are often overlooked in textbooks and films. Through research and discussion, our students uncovered the achievements of:
  • Lewis Howard Latimer, whose innovations in electric lighting helped shape the modern world.
  • Maggie Aderin-Pocock, a British space scientist and science communicator who inspires future generations through her work and outreach.
  • Lonnie Johnson, inventor of the Super Soaker and a prolific engineer whose work with NASA has advanced space exploration.
Students were struck by how rarely these scientists appear in mainstream science education. They asked thoughtful questions: Why are these names missing from the history books? What impact does this lack of representation have on young people’s aspirations? Their debates highlighted a strong sense of fairness and a desire to see science reflect the diversity of those who shape it.
As part of their learning, pupils created presentations, posters, and discussion pieces to share what they discovered. They reflected on how inclusive storytelling in science can empower all learners to see themselves as future innovators.
Over the coming weeks, we’ll be sharing more highlights from other subjects as we continue to celebrate Black History Month. At The Meadows Academy, we believe that every student should see themselves reflected in the stories we tell — and that every story deserves to be told.
